Picking Better Shoes and Backpacks
As summer begins to wrap up and back-to-school shopping begins, it’s important to make sure that the backpacks and shoes you’re using are healthy choices that work with your body rather than causing pain and problems, as well as being stylish.
The biggest rule of thumb when it comes to backpacks is that your backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 10% of your body weight. Buy a backpack that isn’t too large for you, and be smart about how you load it - start with the heaviest items closest to your back and distribute the weight so you can stand up straight. And never carry things you don’t need in your backpack! Take a few minutes in the morning or the night before to go through the clutter of the day and see what is essential to bring to school or work and what can be left at home.
As for shoes, the best thing to remember is that being comfortable is more important than being trendy. That said, comfortable shoes can also be fun and fashionable! Try swapping tall heels for pretty flats, or finding a comfortable pair of sneakers that still looks sharp. Pay attention to how long you are comfortable in different pairs of shoes and don’t push yourself to wear them for more hours than you should. If shoes that pinch or compromise your walking are a must, try bringing a more comfortable pair of shoes to switch out when you’re doing a lot of moving.
